Does digital mental health need to rethink user engagement?

In the article the President and Founder of Woebot Health discusses the use of gamification in digital mental health applications and raises concerns about whether the same tactics that drive online addiction should be used to engage users in mental health solutions. It emphasizes the need for meaningful engagement that goes beyond short-term rewards and focuses on emotional, cognitive, and neurological engagement. The article highlights the importance of establishing a transparent and respectful therapeutic relationship with users, similar to the working alliance between a therapist and a client. It suggests that the convergence of social science, psychology, and artificial intelligence can create digital mental health solutions that simulate the bond of a successful human therapist-patient relationship. These solutions aim to make mental health benefits accessible and can coexist with traditional in-person therapy within a holistic healthcare journey.

How to evolve artificial intelligence models alongside societal needs

In the article from Vice President of Product at Woebot Health, Joe Gallagher discusses the convergence of generation-shaping events and emerging technology in the field of mental health, particularly digital therapeutics. It emphasizes that digital therapeutic tools can establish a comparable therapeutic bond with users as human therapeutic relationships do. However, responsible deployment of AI and machine learning (ML) models is crucial. The article advocates for collaboration between clinicians and technologists to generate relevant and effective responses, ongoing evaluation and retraining of models, and the importance of human oversight to reflect users' lived experiences. The role of AI is seen as a gateway to understanding conversations, not the conversation itself. AI models should confirm assumptions, involve users in decision-making, and support better care.

DIGITAL INTERVENTIONS IN MENTAL HEALTHCARE: THE ROAD AHEAD

On 21 June 2023, NHS leaders and health experts convened at the SilverCloud® by Amwell® Digital Mindset conference to address the present and future challenges facing the UK’s mental health services. Data from the National Audit Office indicates that the proportion of talking therapy sessions conducted over the phone increased from 21 per cent to 60 per cent between 2019 and 2022, while video sessions increased from 2 per cent to 26 per cent. With these figures in mind, speakers at the Digital Mindset conference discussed whether digital interventions, introduced in the appropriate context and setting, could take the pressure off NHS services by helping people stay healthy, thus requiring less in-person treatment. A prevailing consensus among conference attendees was that integrating digital tools into the mental health service chain was not merely an option for the future, but an imperative for the present.
