Improvements in strength and agility measures of functional fitness following a telehealth-delivered home-based exercise intervention in endometrial cancer survivors

Endometrial cancer is strongly linked to obesity and inactivity; however, increased physical activity has important benefits even in the absence of weight loss. Resistance (strength) training can deliver these benefits; yet few women participate in resistance exercise. The purpose of this study was to describe both physiological and functional changes following a home-based strength training intervention.

Acceptance- and mindfulness-based techniques for physical activity promotion in breast cancer survivors: a qualitative study

The purpose of this study was to develop and characterize the relevance and potential utility of an electronically delivered acceptance- and mindfulness-based approaches to physical activity promotion for insufficiently active breast cancer survivors. The acceptance- and mindfulness-based physical activity intervention was delivered to participants electronically over the course of 4–8 weeks.

Pharmacogenomics in cancer supportive care: key issues and future directions

The complexity of cancer care has changed dramatically in the past decade. Advances in genomic science and proteomics have resulted in approvals of companion diagnostics, next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, and novel immunotherapies and targeted therapies, which offer more precise treatments in contrast to the “one-size-fits-all” chemotherapy model. Researchers focus on the clinical challenges and opportunities for effective supportive care, resulting from recent advances in pharmacogenomics.

Evaluation of a new online cognitive assessment tool in breast cancer survivors with cognitive impairment: a prospective cohort study

Currently cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is mainly assessed by means of questionnaires, which is very laborious for the patients and the supervising physician. Researchers evaluated a new online cognitive assessment tool, the MyCognition Quotient (MyCQ, Cambridge) in breast cancer survivors with CRCI, and compared the results with a psychometric test measuring cognitive complaints, depression, and anxiety.

Cancer survivors’ greatest challenges of living with an ostomy: findings from the Ostomy Self-Management Telehealth (OSMT) randomized trial

An ostomy results in lifelong quality of life changes for a cancer survivor. The study describes the greatest challenges reported from a randomized trial of cancer survivors with stomas (ostomies). Cancer survivors with ostomies participating in a multi-site randomized prospective trial of an Ostomy Self-Management Telehealth (OSMT) program versus usual care (UC) were surveyed at six months post accrual.

AI Tool Improves Accuracy of Breast Cancer Imaging

A computer program trained to see patterns among thousands of breast ultrasound images can aid physicians in accurately diagnosing breast cancer, a new study shows. When tested separately on 44,755 already completed ultrasound exams, the artificial intelligence (AI) tool improved radiologists' ability to correctly identify the disease by 37 percent and reduced the number of tissue samples, or biopsies, needed to confirm suspect tumors by 27 percent.

Roche is Validating the Utility of Real-World Evidence as a comparator to Single-arm Clinical Trials

Over the past decade or so, real-world evidence (RWE) has emerged as an extremely important tool for bringing innovative treatments to patients. New research from Roche, one of the largest and most influential life science companies in the world, is making a very strong argument in RWE’s favor. In a relatively rare subpopulation of patients carrying the ALK driver mutation in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), Roche performed a single arm trial for the targeted therapy alectinib. In oncology, it is relatively hard to recruit patients with driver mutation positive disease into trials, so the purpose of Roche’s trial was to try to provide this medicine faster to patients who urgently need it.
