Cigna Hong Kong Launches Medical Insurance Solution for Diabetics

Cigna Hong Kong has today launched Cigna HealthFirst DiaMedic Plan ("DiaMedic"), a medical insurance solution tailored to the needs of individuals suffering from diabetes and pre-diabetes in Hong Kong. One in 10 people in Hong Kong suffer from diabetes, and the Hong Kong Hospital Authority reported a 31.5% increase in patients seeking consultation between 2009/10 and 2014/15[2].

With $32M loan, connected glucometer pioneer AgaMatrix will split company into CGM, BGM businesses

AgaMatrix , the medical device that launched the first ever iPhone-connected glucometer , has secured a $32 million loan in order to reorganize the company into two distinct entities: AgaMatrix, which will continue to focus on Bluetooth-enabled glucometer's such as the company's newest Jazz Wireless 2 device, and WaveForm Technologies, which will be focused on the development of a proprietary continuous glucose monitoring product based on technology acquired from iSense CGM and Bayer Healthcare in 2016. A new holding company called AgaMatrix Holdings will own 100 percent of the stock in both businesses.

Merck subsidiary StayWell acquires app maker MedHelp for undisclosed sum

Yardley, Pennsylvania-based StayWell announced today that it has acquired the mobile health portion of Silicon Valley-based MedHelp, which includes several consumer-facing mobile health apps. These include the diabetes-focused Sugar Sense and My Diet Diary, as well as women’s health apps My Cycles and I’m Expecting. StayWell has been majority-owned by Healthcare Services & Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of global pharmaceutical giant Merck. The company offers employer-specific solutions related to several medical specialties, and has services within 85 percent of US hospitals and health systems.

Voice-powered, in-home care platform wins Amazon Alexa diabetes competition

Seattle-based Wellpepper , developers of a digital patient engagement service, have been announced the winners of the Alexa Diabetes Challenge for their voice-enabled diabetes support platform Sugarpod. Consisting of a scale, foot scanner, and mobile interface along with a Amazon Alexa voice functionality, Sugarpod is designed to support type 2 diabetes care plans by integrating engagement and regular screening into a patient’s daily routine, Wellpepper CEO and Cofounder Anne Weiler explained. The prototype platform does so by living in the home, and permitting numerous engagement interfaces via SMS, email, web, mobile app, and voice. Wellpepper received as being the winner of the challange, $125,000 grand prize.

Artificial pancreas automatically manages diabetics' glucose levels

A novel artificial pancreas (AP) system with a smartphone backbone could automatically monitor and adjust patients' glucose levels with little to no hassle, according to a new clinical study published in the journal Diabetes Care . The researchers’ efforts to develop an adaptive algorithm are based on a previous strategy called “model-predictive control.” By targeting an acceptable glucose level range and building an algorithm that improves with repeated daily cycles, the system can handle basal control and variations due to meals without manual assistance.
