Tandem Diabetes Care Launches t:flex™ Insulin Pump

Tandem Diabetes Care®, Inc. (NASDAQ: TNDM), a medical device company and manufacturer of the t:slim® Insulin Pump, today announced that it is now taking orders for the t:flex™ Insulin Pump, with shipments planned to begin in June. The 480-unit t:flex Pump, cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January 2015, is the largest capacity insulin pump currently offered in the United States.

Maker of diabetes management app One Drop raises $8 million

New York City and Austin, Texas-based Informed Data Systems has raised $8 million for its One Drop mobile diabetes management platform. The round was led by RRE, with additional contributions from BoxGroup, Capital Factory, and existing investors LAUNCH fund and Neu Ventures.

Medtronic gets major FDA nod

Medtronic has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its MiniMed Connect device, which allows users of Medtronic's continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin pump to view data from those devices on their smartphone. At the same time, Medtronic announced a partnership with Samsung to optimize the viewing of this CGM and pump data.

Survey: 65 percent want doctors to add tech tools to care plans

Some 58 percent of people with diabetes want to use technology to track their diets, according to an online survey of 2,535 American adults, conducted by Telcare through SurveyMonkey. Of those surveyed, 16 percent had diabetes, 61 percent knew someone living with diabetes, and 21 percent cared for someone with diabetes.

Panasonic scoops up Bayer's diabetes care business

Japan's Panasonic Healthcare Holdings has announced plans to acquire the diabetes care business of Bayer AG for roughly $1.13 billion. Bayer had tried to sell its Diabetes Care business unit – which includes the Contour portfolio of monitors and strips and Breeze2, Brio, Entrust, Elite and Microlet lancing devices – as early as 2012, before pulling back. Diabetes Care has a collaboration agreement in place with Medtronic, one of the biggest players in the mobile diabetes care management industry.

Small 2012 study found PHR app did not improve health-related quality of life

Patients with diabetes may be more likely benefit from a mobile phone-based health coaching program with remote monitoring than patients with heart disease, according to a study of 267 heart patients and 250 diabetes patients, which was conducted in 2012 by researchers in Finland and published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.
