Will Samsung tap Glooko for S Health?

Glooko has raised $7 million from Samsung Ventures and Lifeforce Ventures, as well as existing investors including The Social + Capital Partnership, Sundeep Madra and Yogen Dalal. The investment move from Samsung is particularly interesting given two other recent pieces of news: Glooko's recent expansion into Android compatibility, and Samsung's December FDA clearance for S Health, which likely allowed the mobile company to connect its app to additional medical devices.

Glooko, Joslin partner to develop diabetes management platform

Glooko, maker of diabetes management software and glucometer connector cables, is teaming up with the Joslin Diabetes Center to co-develop a "virtual Joslin" remote diabetes management platform to be offered to patients via private or government payors. Glooko and Joslin will work together on the platform, with Joslin providing educational content as well as ways to analyze and work with the data generated by patients' connected devices.

Report: 24M people will use diabetes apps in 2018

Only about 1.2 percent of people with diabetes who own a smartphone use a mobile application to manage their condition, according to a new report by Research2Guidance. That's a group of about 1.6 million users. However, the firm predicts that by 2018 that number will rise to 24 million users, or 7.8 percent of smartphone owners with diabetes.

Mississippi telehealth project may be a model for the nation

A remote care management pilot that makes use of mHealth tools and services has been launched in Mississippi. Officials hope it will make an impact in the state with the highest percentage of adult diabetics and cut into the $3 billion in diabetes-related health costs that the state incurs each year. The Diabetes Telehealth Network was unveiled this week by Gov. Phil Bryant. The public-private partnership, which includes the University of Mississippi Medical Center, North Sunflower Medical Center, GE Healthcare, Intel-GE Care Innovations and CSpire Wireless, is being billed as the first of its kind, targeting at-risk residents in underserves areas.
