Insulet Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2013 Results

Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ: PODD), the leader in tubeless insulin pump technology with its OmniPod® Insulin Management System, today announced financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2013. Fourth quarter 2013 revenue increased 19% to $68.5 million, compared to $57.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. The increase in revenue is a result of continued strong patient adoption of the OmniPod insulin pump in the United States and international markets during the fourth quarter of 2013.

Weight Watchers adds diabetes-specific program for employers

Weight Watchers announced a new weight loss program for people with type 2 diabetes, which it will provide through its employee wellness offering. The new program, called Weight Watchers for Diabetes, will incorporate the expertise of Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) into the company's existing weight loss and weight management system. Weight Watchers will also offer digital tools to members of Weight Watchers for Diabetes through eTools, a suite of tools available online and on mobile devices to all Weight Watchers members.

Diabetes app market 'fragile' but improving

A new report finds that 65 percent of all diabetes app downloads are handled by only 14 app publishers, the majority of which are small tech companies. The report by Research2Guidance, "Diabetes App Market 2014," finds that the market is "still very fragile," with only 1.2 percent of the world's "addressable market" (diabetics using a smartphone or tablet) actually using mobile diabetes apps. But that number is expected to grow to 7.8 percent by 2018, according to the Berlin-based mobile app research company.

Prediction: 24 million will use diabetes apps by 2018

Health and fitness app app maker Azumio currently leads the diabetes app market with 17.8 percent market share, according to a new report from Research2Guidance. The company tracked iOS and Android downloads of more than 1,000 diabetes apps between 2008 and 2013 with the help of Priori Data, a Berlin-based company that collects publicly available metadata on apps.

Closing the loop overnight at home setting: psychosocial impact for adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their parents

The aim of the study is to explore the experiences of adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and their parents taking part in an overnight closed loop study at home, using qualitative and quantitative research methods.Adolescents aged 12–18 years on insulin pump therapy were recruited to a pilot closed loop study in the home setting. Following training on the use of a study insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), participants were randomized to receive either real-time CGM combined with overnight closed loop or real-time CGM alone followed by the alternative treatment for an additional 21 days with a 2–3-week washout period in between study arms.
