Boston Business Journal: GNS Healthcare raises $10M for big data

GNS Healthcare Inc. has raised a $10 million Series B funding round led by existing investor Cambia Health Solutions, based in Portland Oregon. New investors, California�s Heritage Provider Network and Mitsui & Co also joined the round. The announcement follows the Cambridge company�s expansion to a second office in Austin, Texas, and a plan to grow head count to 80 from 50 by year�s end, CEO Colin Hill said. Cambridge-based GNS Healthcare provides data analytics to biotechnology companies including Biogen Idec and Genzyme Corp., health insurers like Aetna and research hospital powerhouses like Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women�s Hospital. Proceeds of the financing will be used to expand GNS Healthcare�s business across the health care industry.

Oncology-centric informatics firm Cota raises $18M

Cota, an oncology-centric data analytics company, has closed an $18 million growth equity round. Boston Millennia Partners was among the new investors in Cota, which builds technology to measure patient outcomes from specific treatment protocols. (The name stands for Cancer Outcomes Tracking and Analysis.) This is the second major investment in Cota this year. In May, pharma manufacturers Celgene and Novartis joined molecular information company Foundation Medicine and consulting firm HealthScape Advisors to make unspecified investments.

Medisafe raises $14.5M, announces European expansion

Medication adherence startup MediSafe has raised $14.5 million in a round led by Octopus Ventures and M Ventures (the venture arm of Merck Pharmaceuticals), with participation from existing investors Pitango Venture Capital, 7wire ventures, lool Ventures, TriVentures and Qualcomm Ventures. The company also announced that it will begin expanding into Europe using some of the funds.

SkinVision gets $7.6M to continue expanding skin cancer app

Amsterdam-based skin cancer screening app SkinVision has raised $7.6 million in new funding from existing investors Leo Pharma and PHS Fund, with additional contributions from undisclosed new backers described by the company as "high net worth impact investors." This is the second major funding raise for the company, which launched in 2012 under the name Skin Scan, after a $3.4 million round in 2015. It also received some additional funding from Leo in 2017. The company's total funding stands at $13 million.
