AppliedVR, an immersive therapeutics pioneer advancing a novel approach to medicine, today announced the results from a follow-up study that analyzed the durable effects of its flagship product, RelieVRx, which was recently granted marketing authorization by the FDA for chronic low back pain (CLBP). The research was published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) and reported the six-month follow-up results from a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT) of RelieVRx (formerly named EaseVRx). Researchers sought to evaluate the lasting effects of the RelieVRx eight-week, self-administered behavioral skills-based VR program versus sham VR in 188 adults with CLBP.

Study: New VR sensory room reduces anxiety in people with intellectual disability

A new VR programme with interactive sight, sound, and touch experiences has helped improve outcomes for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities, including autism and intellectual disability. The five-month preliminary study evaluated the viability and benefits of using Devika's Evenness VR Sensory Space technology as an intervention tool among 31 adults with different neurodevelopmental disabilities and their carers. Based on pre and post-scores of the users, the technology helped reduce their anxiety, and in particular, lowered depressive symptoms among participants with depression.

MyndVR announces first-ever payer partnership, expanding VR therapy to seniors in New York

MyndVR, a therapeutic VR company focused on seniors, is now covered by insurance for the first time through a managed care organization in New York. The company’s VR content has been available to AgeWell’s Carewell members since the start of this year. CareWell plan members can use MyndVR headsets to enjoy virtual travel, special adventures and entertainment. They can also share their experiences in real time with relatives using VR. Virtual reality companies BehaVR and OxfordVR merge

On Tuesday, VR behavioral health platform BehaVR and OxfordVR, a VR platform for severe mental health issues, announced their merger. The companies say their combination creates the largest virtual reality healthcare delivery platform. The companies, which will unite under the BehaVR brand, also garnered $13 million in Series B funding to support the merger. The round was led by Oxford Science Enterprises and Optum Ventures, with participation from Accenture Ventures, Confluent Health, Thornton Capital and Chrysalis Ventures.

Pear Therapeutics Acquired Two VR Therapeutics from Firsthand Technology against Chronic Pain

Pear Therapeutics announced the acquisition of two pain relief therapies from healthcare VR company Firsthand Technology. The the first, called “Cool!,” distracts patients from pain or anxiety by having the user play games with virtual otters in a remote snowy landscape, and has been evaluated in clinical studies dating as far back as 2000. The second, called “Glow!,” saw its first proof-of-concept clinical studies published in 2015, and instead has users practice mindfulness and self-control while gathering virtual fireflies.
