Digital therapeutics are just what the doctor ordered for patients — and for global healthcare systems

It would be hard to argue that digital products have a net-positive impact on our health. The habit-forming power of digital products can be used for therapeutic benefit too, often by changing the behavior that causes disease or ill health. This new range of products is being commonly referred to as digital therapeutics. These apps and services offer evidence-based and personalized behavioral therapy, and cater to a broad cross-section of illnesses and conditions — from diabetes to loneliness, and everything in-between.

2Morrow adds chronic pain management to its mobile behavior therapy offerings

As opioid abuse continues to make impact in the US, more and more tech-driven answers to the drug crisis are springing up that aim to reduce patients’ reliance on prescription opioids. Just yesterday, behavioral health therapy app maker 2Morrow threw its hat into the ring with the announcement that its services now include a digital chronic pain management program. Much like the company’s other offerings — which target smoking, weight, and stress — the pain management program is based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a clinically tested form of cognitive behavioral therapy that’s strongly endorsed by the Society of Clinical Psychology.

A study presented Monday at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions found that one-third of those who initially screened positive for prediabetes or diabetes were able to bring their blood sugar down to normal levels after taking part in a workforce-based intervention. The study by Quest Diagnostics, which involved a collaboration with the digital health provider Omada Health, shows promise for employer-based wellness programs that involve a 2-step process: screening for those at risk, and then offering an evidence-based program of lifestyle change and support for those whose health risks are revealed during screening.
