NHS staff across England get free access to mental health apps Daylight and Sleepio

NHS England has announced a national mental health support programme to provide NHS staff with evidence-based digital programmes to protect their mental health during the COVID-19 response. The NHS-accredited apps Daylight – designed to help with worry and anxiety – and Sleepio – a digital sleep improvement programme featuring Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques – are both developed by digital therapeutics company Big Health. Fifteen NHS trusts and six GP practices have already rolled out access to the programmes to over 100,000 staff, with the apps now made freely available to all NHS employees across the country in partnership with NHS England.

Digital Mental Health support to be Provided to Young People as they Return to School

SilverCloud, the leading digital therapeutics provider, has partnered with mental health charity Northpoint Wellbeing to co-develop a new digital therapy programme to alleviate anxiety in young people. Coming at a time when children are returning to school and face huge uncertainty, it will be available for school clusters across the Leeds area and NHS Child and Adolescent Services Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Calderdale. The programme is also being rolled out nationally to other NHS and education services. The online treatment, based on cognitive behavioural therapy, is designed for young people 14 years and over but can be used for younger children if a professional assesses them as suitable.

Meaningful digital health engagement is more complicated than how long or often users log in

Sustained engagement is a key metric when determining whether a digital health-based intervention is finding its mark, but the industry has been anything but uniform in determining objective measures of user behavior and their relationship to clinical outcomes. A study published Friday in JAMA Network Open takes another approach and employs machine learning techniques to better describe engagement among 54,604 patients provided a digital health intervention – in this case, an internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) tool for depression and anxiety symptoms developed by SilverCloud Health.

Landmark Randomized Controlled Trial Demonstrates Efficacy of Daylight™ Digital Therapeutic in Improving Anxiety

The University of Oxford’s Sleep & Circadian Neuroscience Institute, and Big Health, today announced publication of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) assessing the efficacy and safety of Big Health’s Daylight product in improving symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), in the journal Depression and Anxiety. The study found that Daylight significantly reduced symptoms of anxiety in trial participants, as compared to the control group at six weeks after intervention. By week 10 follow-up, 71% of Daylight users in the study achieved remission of GAD, as compared to 33% of those in the control group.
