Wise Therapeutics Raises Pre-Seed Funding; Releases Free Version of Personal Zen App

Wise Therapeutics, a digital therapeutics company created to improve access to effective mental health treatments using digital interventions, announced the closing of its first outside funding of $525,000 to support Android development and early rollout of its flagship app Personal Zen for stress and anxiety. The app offers a game-like cognitive training algorithm that is based on years of clinical research by its co-founder Dr Tracy Dennis-Tiwary. Its pre-seed funding round was led by SeedLink SL, an early-stage VC investor focusing on digital health and technology solutions, including additional investors Teem Ventures, a NYC-based venture development studio, and Reshma Saujani, a women’s leadership advocate and the Founder of Girls Who Code.

BETSI CADWALADR'S PARTNERSHIP TO HELP PEOPLE ACCESS FREE ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) have launched a partnership with south Gwynedd based charity Tan y Maen to help people access the new SilverCloud courses in North Wales. The courses have recently been made available free of charge to anyone aged 16 or over in Wales, as part of a £1.3m package of mental health service support announced by the Welsh Government. BCUHB’s partnership with Tan y Maen will enable people to be assessed to see if SilverCloud is the right tool for them, and given help to access the courses and other mental health related apps.

DIGITAL MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT FOR TEENAGERS ROLLED OUT

Teenagers starting their GCSE and A level studies are being treated for depression through a new digital mental health therapy programme for young people. SilverCloud Health is one of the leaders in this growing field, providing its services for adult mental health to 75% of the NHS. It has recently extended its digital cognitive behavioural therapy programmes for young people to incorporate an online module for treating depression. The new module is being introduced to teenagers aged 14 and upwards by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), including Dorset CAMHS and will soon be widely available to health trusts and schools across the UK.

The FDA has granted a De Novo clearance to San Francisco-based Mahana Therapeutics' Parallel, a prescription digital therapeutic for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) that delivers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The three-month digital treatment logs a patient's symptoms and uses them to deliver relevant guidance. Bold Health's CBT app for IBS goes head-to-head with Headspace

Bold Health, a London-based company developing digital therapeutics for gastrointestinal conditions, is backing a new University of Pennsylvania-led study that will directly compare the company's cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) app for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to Headspace's consumer mindfulness and meditation app. Researchers will be randomly assigning 300 participants with IBS to receive either Bold Health's Zemedy app or the Headspace mindfulness app for free. Each group will have the app for eight weeks, after which those who received the Headspace app will also be given access to Zemedy.

Simulation model: Big Health's Sleepio drives greater cost savings than group CBT or drug therapy

The research was funded by Big Health, and conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins, the University of California, San Francisco, and the digital health company. The mathematical simulation model found that, compared to other insomnia interventions like group cognitive behavioral therapy or pharmacotherapy, digital CBT delivered via Big Health's Sleepio was more cost-effective due to lower expenditures. Compared to no insomnia treatment, the model indicated a net monetary benefit of $681.06 per individual receiving Sleepio over six months.
