DarioHealth Awarded U.S. Patent for Optical Transmission of Data Between a Sensor and Smart Device

DarioHealth today announced that it has received a notice of allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office titled "Systems and Methods for Enabling Optical Transmission of Data Between a Sensor and a Smart Device." The patent will allow Dario to develop paired smartphone devices that can collect and analyze real-time medical data and provide immediate and highly detailed, personalized data reports to the user. Once collected, this data can be shared with healthcare providers through the DarioEngage™ platform to facilitate digital health interventions based on the data analysis.

Sanofi targets digital by cutting new deals with Abbott, Happify

Sanofi has been active in the digital space this week inking two big deals: one with tech company Abbott and the other with digital platform Happify. Sanofi’s deal with Happify is focused on treating multiple sclerosis symptoms, in particular anxiety and depression. The pair are collaborating on a digital therapeutic app to help people manage and improve their psychological outcomes. The plan is to develop and test the app in clinical trials before seeking FDA clearance.

As Medicine Evolves, So Too Must Those Who Assure Its Quality

In 2018, the US Pharmacopeia (USP) established a collaboration with the Digital Therapeutics Alliance (DTA) aimed at helping to guide companies entering this space achieve the highest standards for their products. “We’re looking at how to ensure that these products work well and offer reproducible performance over time in a reliable way,” says Megan Coder, executive director of the DTA. She adds, “there’s scientific rigor and methodology that goes into each digital therapeutic.” At first glance, it seems difficult to assess a digital therapeutic in the same manner as one would assess quality for an antibiotic or cancer drug. But the general principles used by USP to set standards for conventional drugs—identity, strength, purity, and performance—may be broad enough to be translated to the digital world.

Pilot study: Akili's digital ADHD therapy feasible, well liked by autistic children, parents

A small feasibility study conducted by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia suggests that Project: Evo, the digital medicine developed by Akili Interactive Labs that is delivered via a video game, continually engaged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and reduced their ADHD symptoms, although more objective measures of cognitive control were mixed.

Real-World Data based on Kaiku Health Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Module published in Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology

Kaiku Health, Oulu University Hospital and Docrates Cancer Center have published first data on the symptoms reported by cancer patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapies in a real-world setting. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether symptoms reported by cancer patients using the Kaiku Health ICI module corresponded to symptoms reported in earlier clinical trials. The study also sought to investigate the feasibility of electronic self-reporting of symptoms and whether there are significant correlations between different reported symptoms.

Small study links behavioral, neural changes in ADHD boys receiving video game intervention

Conducted in Singapore, the study was conducted as part of a larger controlled investigation of boys with ADHD. It compared an intervention group of 18 participants (mean age 9 years) to a control arm of 11 participants (mean age 9.45 years). The former received eight weeks of treatment with a brain computer interface (BCI) therapy delivered using a headband with mounted dry EEG sensors and the ATENTIVmynd video game, an ADHD therapy in which players’ brainwaves and focus levels impact their success. The researchers found that children in the intervention group had significantly more efficient local processing within an area of the brain previously shown to impact how an individual detects the importance of incoming information. The researchers did note some limitations with their investigation, such as the small sample size and the resulting need to combine multiple ADHD subtypes within a single study group.
