Lunit gets FDA approval for AI cancer diagnosis solution

South Korean medical AI company Lunit announced that its Lunit Insight DBT, an AI imaging diagnosis solution aiding in breast cancer diagnosis, has secured 510(k) pre-market clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This marks Lunit's third FDA approval, joining its AI emergency triage solution Lunit Insight Triage, and the breast imaging analysis tool Lunit Insight MMG. The Lunit InsighT DBT analyses 3D images from digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) with AI, offering faster and more accurate results than traditional 2D mammography. With FDA approval, Lunit hopes to secure a share of the US market, which represents 65% of global breast cancer screenings, with DBT's widespread adoption.

Bayer pledges up to $1.5bn for Recursion oncology alliance

Bayer has restructured and expanded its ongoing partnership with Recursion Pharmaceuticals on artificial intelligence-powered drug discovery, switching to a focus on cancer via a revised deal that could be worth up to $1.5 billion. The two companies will now work on up to seven precision oncology projects, making use of Recursion’s drug discovery platform that draws on a dataset of five trillion biological and chemical relationships and combines wet-lab biology and chemistry with machine learning tools in a form of “digitised” drug discovery. Under the terms of the new agreement, Bayer gets the option to exclusively license novel therapeutics derived from the programme. Juergen Eckhardt, the German group’s business development head, said it “could be one of the most disruptive technologies of our time.” Recursion’s platform has attracted other big pharma clients, notably Roche/Genentech, which signed up for a decade-long partnership in 2021 focusing on neuroscience and oncology drugs that involved a $150 million upfront payment and could be worth several billion dollars if fully exercised. That alliance recently generated its first ‘hit series’ for an undisclosed oncology target.

Major study validates Owkin’s best in class AI diagnostic for colorectal cancer biomarker aimed at optimizing patient access to immunotherapy

In a peer-reviewed study published today, a team of scientists from French-American techbio Owkin and pathology labs in France present a blind validation of MSIntuit™ CRC, a first-in-class AI-driven digital pathology diagnostic developed by Owkin, as a pre-screening tool aimed at optimizing the precision of diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). Microsatellite Instability (MSI) is a key genomic biomarker in colorectal cancer and represents ~15% of the overall CRC population. Those patients whose tumors show MSI, are considered likely to respond to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy and recommended for it. Conversely, immune checkpoint inhibitor is not routinely recommended for those with tumors that are microsatellite stable (MSS). Prescreening tools that can remove the need to test all patients offer the opportunity to streamline the process and reduce pressure on laboratory staff and resources. Owkin's study published in Nature Communications reveals that MSIntuit CRC can accurately rule out nearly 50% of MSS patients, while correctly classifying more than 96% of MSI patients, on par with current gold standard methods (92-95%). Such new solutions pave the way for an optimized screening workflow to screen more patients, faster.
