ChatGPT Shows Limited Ability to Recommend Guidelines-Based Cancer Treatments

With ChatGPT now at patients’ fingertips, researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, assessed how consistently the artificial intelligence chatbot provides recommendations for cancer treatment that align with National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. Their findings, published in JAMA Oncology, show that in approximately one-third of cases, ChatGPT 3.5 provided an inappropriate (“non-concordant”) recommendation, highlighting the need for awareness of the technology’s limitations.

How real-world data is enhancing our understanding of lung cancer recurrence

A collaborative team from COTA and AstraZeneca used curated RWD to investigate factors affecting disease-free survival and recurrence patterns in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The researchers examined patterns of care, disease-free survival, and patient characteristics using real-world data from over 700 early-stage NSCLC patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2018. They found that patients with more advanced disease stages, genetic mutations (EGFRm positive), and those who only had surgical resection had shorter disease-free survival times. Distant/metastatic recurrence was common among all patients. The study confirmed that disease stage at diagnosis influences disease-free survival and supported the idea that adjuvant therapies improve disease-free survival compared to surgery alone.

UK study prompts call for MRI screening for prostate cancer

A UK study has suggested that a 10-minute MRI scan is more effective at detecting prostate cancer than testing for blood levels of the biomarker PSA, picking up serious cases that would not be spotted using PSA alone. There is currently no UK-wide screening programme for prostate cancer because the PSA test is not reliable, although men aged over 50 can request one if desired. The analysis revealed that out of 29 who were found to have serious prostate cancer, 15 had a low PSA score, which would mean they were not referred for further clinical investigation. Three men were diagnosed with low-risk cancer that did not require treatment.

Veracyte Announces that Findings Published in JCO Precision Oncology to Predict Treatment Response in Recurrent Prostate Cancer

Veracyte announced that new data published in JCO Precision Oncology suggest that gene expression signatures derived from the company’s Decipher Genomics Resource for Intelligent Discovery (GRID) database may help advance understanding of the genomic drivers impacting patient response to treatment for recurrent prostate cancer. Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis using the Decipher GRID database to determine whether specific genomic signatures could help predict which patients would benefit from the aggressive therapy regimen, and which may require additional or alternative care. The findings, from the Phase 2 STREAM study, suggest the potential to use transcriptomic signatures to identify patients in this setting who may benefit from more intensive salvage therapy as well as those who may need alternative care such as chemotherapy.
