Lunit SCOPE IO Reveals Promising Results in Neoadjuvant Immunotherapy Study for Head and Neck Cancer Patients

Lunit announced the publication of a new study featuring Lunit SCOPE IO, Lunit's AI-powered analyzer for quantitative immune phenotyping from H&E. The study was recently published in Clinical Cancer Research (CCR), an international journal by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). The study focuses on the efficacy of neoadjuvant immunotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. In this phase II randomized clinical trial, 48 HNSCC patients were enrolled, with 24 receiving preoperative durvalumab and 24 receiving a combination of durvalumab plus tremelimumab before surgical resection. The study findings revealed that patients treated with the combination of durvalumab and tremelimumab exhibited significantly better 4-year distant recurrence-free survival (DRFS) compared to those receiving durvalumab monotherapy. Additionally, Lunit SCOPE IO's AI analysis backed the remarkable shift in the tumor microenvironment towards an inflamed phenotype, characterized by increased immune activity within the tumor area, in patients receiving combination therapy.

Elekta partners with MSD to enhance kidney cancer care using digital solutions

Elekta announced a partnership with MSD (Merck & Co., USA) to develop digital patient monitoring for people with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), using Elekta’s Kaiku Health solution, a digital platform for patient engagement and reported outcomes monitoring. Elekta, with support from MSD, will develop a digital module for patients, keeping them connected with their care team, and educating them about their disease, the treatment and possible side effects. This module includes comprehensive symptom monitoring and patient support, providing patients with tailored and timely symptom monitoring. In addition, the module offers digital education and support materials created specifically for immuno-oncology (IO)-based combination therapy in advanced RCC. The module will be validated in 2024 in collaboration with multiple leading cancer clinics in Europe.

Researchers Develop Deep Learning Model to Predict Breast Cancer

A new study published in Radiology reveals the development of an interpretable artificial intelligence (AI) model, named AsymMirai, for predicting 5-year breast cancer risk from mammograms. Traditional mammography screening can significantly lower the risk of breast cancer-related mortality, but accurately predicting which women will develop breast cancer remains challenging. While previous AI models, such as Mirai, have shown promise in this regard, their complex reasoning process raises concerns about overreliance and potential misdiagnoses. Lead author Jon Donnelly and colleagues at Duke University developed AsymMirai, a simplified AI method that enhances interpretability compared to Mirai. By analyzing 210,067 mammograms from 81,824 patients, the researchers demonstrated that AsymMirai performs almost as well as Mirai in predicting 1- to 5-year breast cancer risk. AsymMirai's straightforward reasoning process makes it a valuable tool for assisting radiologists in breast cancer diagnosis and risk prediction.

AI-Based App can Help Physicians Find Skin Melanoma

A study led by Linköping University in Sweden tested a mobile app, Dermalyser (AI Medical Technology, Stockholm, Sweden), using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze images of skin lesions for diagnosing melanoma in primary care settings. Published in the British Journal of Dermatology, the study revealed promising results, showing the app's high precision in identifying melanoma and distinguishing it from harmless lesions. The app detected all melanomas and missed only one precursor, with a 99.5% probability of accurately identifying non-melanoma lesions. While the app's effectiveness is encouraging, further research is needed to evaluate its real-world utility as a decision support tool. The researchers plan to conduct a larger follow-up study in multiple countries to assess the app's performance in active decision-making scenarios.

Owkin and University Hospitals Birmingham collaborate to use AI diagnostics in a study that may diagnose and help treat colorectal cancer quicker

Owkin and University Hospitals Birmingham collaborate for a new five year research partnership to use artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the screening and diagnosis of a range of diseases, starting with colorectal cancer. The first research project in this collaboration aims to evaluate the performance of Owkin’s MSIntuit CRC solution in the United Kingdom across UHB’s cohort of 830 patients with primary colorectal adenocarcinoma. Already CE-marked in the European Union and registered for use by the MHRA, the MSIntuit CRC pre-screening solution assists pathologists in the identification of the Microsatellite Instability (MSI) status of colorectal patients, using a deep learning algorithm on digital histology slides.

Lunit SCOPE AI Enhances Pathologist Concordance and Accuracy in HER2, ER, and PR Assessment

Lunit announced the publication of a new study featuring Lunit SCOPE HER2 and Lunit SCOPE ER/PR, Lunit's AI-powered analyzer of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), estrogen receptor (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR). The study aimed to evaluate the role of Lunit SCOPE in enhancing pathologists’ consistency and accuracy of breast cancer molecular subtype classification. Results from the study demonstrated a significant increase in agreement among pathologists on the status of HER2, ER, and PR, especially in cases with intermediate weakly positive expressions. Notably, AI assistance led to an increase in agreement on HER2 status from 49.3% to 74.1%, ER from 93.0% to 96.5%, and PR from 84.6% to 91.5%. Consequently, with AI assistance, the agreement among pathologists in classification of breast cancer molecular subtypes saw an increase from 58.2% to 78.6%.
