Meaningful digital health engagement is more complicated than how long or often users log in

Sustained engagement is a key metric when determining whether a digital health-based intervention is finding its mark, but the industry has been anything but uniform in determining objective measures of user behavior and their relationship to clinical outcomes. A study published Friday in JAMA Network Open takes another approach and employs machine learning techniques to better describe engagement among 54,604 patients provided a digital health intervention – in this case, an internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) tool for depression and anxiety symptoms developed by SilverCloud Health.

Meal logging & lesson completion tied to greater weight loss among Livongo DPP users

A retrospective analysis of more than 2,000 Livongo Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) participants found an average weight loss of 5.1% from baseline after 12 months, and 6.6% among those who designated as high engagers. The study, conducted by Livongo and published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, honed in on the relationships between specific program behaviors and program engagement with weight-loss outcomes. Among the 2,037 participants included in the final analysis, 32.3% (n = 658) completed enough lessons to meet the CDC criteria of high engagement. Further analysis of the participants found food logging through Livongo's digital tool to be the greatest predictor of weight loss, followed by lesson completion and physical activity.

Sleepio study suggests insomnia treatment could also improve depressive symptoms

The use of cognitive-behavioral therapy interventions, such as Big Health’s Sleepio program, has been found to improve both sleep and mental health in individuals with insomnia and clinically significant depressive symptoms, according to new research published in the Journal of Sleep Research. Although the study was conducted at the University of Oxford, some of the researchers have financial ties to Big Health, and parts of the investigation were funded by Big Health. The study included 3,352 participants as a sub-analysis of data collected from two randomized control trials measuring the effectiveness of Sleepio. Researchers found that addressing sleep problems in individuals who also have depressive symptoms could increase the resolution of depressive symptoms by up to three times.
