Novartis, Healint study uses self tracking app to examine migraine, mental health connection

A recent presentation by headache-focused digital health company Healint and pharma giant Novartis employed Healint’s migraine tracking app Migraine Buddy to look at how migraines interact with anxiety and depression. The research found that chronic migraines may induce anxiety and depression instead of the other way around, contradicting previous thought. Authors of the study found that 43 percent of users in the sample suffered from anxiety or depression during a migraine attack (37 percent reporting anxiety and 20 percent reporting depression). The results also show that half of the patients with 15 or more migraine days a month reported anxiety or depression, compared to 34 percent of patients with less than four migraine days.

FareWell changes name to Better Therapeutics, sees 0.8 percent A1c reduction in small study

San Francisco-based FareWell is changing its name to Better Therapeutics, a rebranding that reflects the company’s shift in focus from weight loss and disease prevention to digital therapeutics to treat chronic diseases. To punctuate that shift, Better Therapeutics is announcing the name change on the same day as the publication of a study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research that demonstrates the company’s technology can reduce HbA1c in people with Type 2 diabetes. The nonrandomized study included 118 individuals with Type 2 diabetes, recruited primarily via Facebook ads. They used Better Therapeutic’s app-based platform, which also included phone calls with health coaches, for 12 weeks. Participants interacted with the app an average of 4.3 times a day and more than 86 percent stuck with the app for the full 12 weeks. Those who were more engaged also tended to have better outcomes.

Research overview: Findings shared at the 2018 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Conference

Earlier this month, Propeller Health attended the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and World Allergy Organization Joint Conference in Orlando, FL. The conference highlights key advancements in research through symposiums and poster sessions. Propeller, in collaboration with the Children’s Hospital Colorado, presented inhaler sensor data that assessed patterns of rescue and controller medication use among children and adults with self-reported persistent asthma. Using sensor data from almost 1,400 patients, the company observed rates of controller inhaler adherence by age, time of day, and season. Propeller Health found that adolescents and young adults had lower rates of adherence compared to older adults who demonstrated improved adherence with increasing age.

Study: Smartphone app effective in treating serious mental illness

A recent study published by Psychiatric Services found that mobile health interventions were as effective in treating patients with serious mental illness compared to an in-person group therapy. The study found that participants in the mobile health group were more likely to remain fully engaged in the eight-week study than those receiving traditional care. Researchers also found that satisfaction rates between the two groups were similar, and that the conditions of participants in both groups improved significantly.

How Digital Health Interventions are Changing the One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Asthma Treatment

The symptoms of asthma may vary dramatically from patient to patient. Age of onset, triggers and mechanism of disease are factors that also influence the symptoms of asthma, the way the disease is expressed and its severity. Propeller Health recently partnered with research scientists from Children’s Hospital Colorado to better understand two of the most challenging complexities of asthma: medication adherence and the assessment of asthma control.

Quest, Omada Health Collaboration Shows One-Third in Workforce Study Reduced Risk for Diabetes

A study presented Monday at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions found that one-third of those who initially screened positive for prediabetes or diabetes were able to bring their blood sugar down to normal levels after taking part in a workforce-based intervention. The study by Quest Diagnostics, which involved a collaboration with the digital health provider Omada Health, shows promise for employer-based wellness programs that involve a 2-step process: screening for those at risk, and then offering an evidence-based program of lifestyle change and support for those whose health risks are revealed during screening.
