Medtronic showcases smartphone-enabled continuous glucose monitoring

Medtronic has developed a Bluetooth-enabled continuous glucose monitoring system for patients with diabetes, that will connect to an iOS app, Medtronic Global Program Marketing Manager Samantha Katz announced from the stage at Health 2.0 in Santa Clara, California. On the app, which will work with a future generation of Medtronic's existing sensor, users will be able to set their own custom ranges and be alerted by a push notification or an alarm when their glucose goes over or under a certain level.

Turkish mobile operator reports efficacy data for wireless-enabled glucose meter device

Turkish mobile operator Turkcell teamed up with Istanbul University researchers to study how its wireless-enabled diabetes device, Turkcell Healthmeter, would impact patient outcomes. The Turkcell Healthmeter is a small, cellular-enabled device that wirelessly pairs with a number of Bluetooth-enabled blood glucose meters -- no smartphone required. Those with the connected device saw their average HbA1c levels (a three-month blood sugar average) decrease by 9 percent, according to Turkcell. The company said that patients using the devices experienced a 0.3 percent change in HbA1c values on average.

Glooko's new device Bluetooth-enables popular glucose meters

Glooko, which makes a cable that syncs popular glucose meters to a companion app on smartphones, has always said it plans eventually to replace that cable with a wireless Bluetooth connection. Today, the company announced that they've finally released that product, the Bluetooth MeterSync Blue. The small box will plug into a patient's glucose meter and send the information wireless, via Bluetooth, to Android or Apple phones. The company will distribute the products via the health systems and payer groups that it works with. Those groups will be able to receive near-realtime health data from people with diabetes, which can then be fed into Glooko's Population Tracker, a software platform that helps doctors manage diabetic populations.

Dexcom Share, a smartphone-connected CGM charging cradle, gets FDA clearance

Dexcom Share, a cradle device that will allow users to send data from a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor to multiple smartphones, has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA. The system is designed to help parents and caregivers remotely track the glucose of a child, elderly parent, or spouse when the diabetes patient is at home or stationary. “Dexcom Share represents a significant advance in diabetes care by allowing people with diabetes to share important glucose information with their loved ones from afar,” Terrance H. Gregg, Chief Executive Office of Dexcom, said in a statement.

Telcare raises $32.5 million for cellular-enabled glucose meter, to expand to related conditions

Bethesda, Maryland-based cellular-enabled blood glucose meter company Telcare has raised $32.5 million led by Norwest Venture Partners with participation from Mosaic Health Solutions and existing backers The Qualcomm Life Fund and Sequoia Capital. The latest round of funding takes Telcare's total disclosed funding to north of $60 million . Telcare offers a diabetes management package that includes a cellular-enabled glucose meter with two-way messaging that transmits to an FDA-cleared care management server, in addition to iPhone and Android apps that help keep family members in the loop about the progress of loved ones with diabetes.
