New AI Tool Predicts Risk for Chronic Pain in Cancer Patients

A new study by researchers at the University of Florida and other institutions uses AI to predict which breast cancer patients are most likely to develop chronic pain, a condition that affects about one-third of cancer patients and can significantly impact their quality of life. The AI model, developed using data from over 1,000 patients, correctly predicted chronic pain in more than 80% of cases. Key risk factors include anxiety, depression, prior cancer diagnoses, and certain infections. The findings, published in the Journal of Nursing Scholarship on July 26, highlight the potential of AI to personalize treatments by identifying at-risk patients early on. Integrating this model into healthcare systems would require further research, but it could enhance doctors' ability to tailor treatments to individual needs.
