Tempus Next Launches New Algorithm to Close Care Gaps in Guideline-Directed IHC Testing, Starting with HER2

Tempus has launched a new program within its Tempus Next platform, focused on using algorithms to identify patients likely to test positive for actionable biomarkers and require confirmatory testing per clinical guidelines. The program initially targets care gaps in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) testing for select metastatic cancers. The new RNA-based algorithm, part of the xR assay, predicts IHC/ISH positivity in tumor samples and notifies physicians about patients who might benefit from confirmatory HER2 testing. The program, now available at pilot sites, leverages Tempus' genomics, AI applications, and data analytics to provide real-time, guideline-directed care.

Researchers Customize AI Tools for Digital Pathology

Scientists from Weill Cornell Medicine and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have developed AI tools for digital pathology, leveraging high-resolution digital images for disease diagnosis and treatment guidance. Their study, published in The Lancet Digital Health, shows that ChatGPT can be tailored for digital pathology and cancer biology to provide accurate responses and detailed results, aiding pathologists without coding expertise in using complex software. To address information glitches in general LLMs, Dr. Umeton started with a safe, private and secure ChatGPT version implemented at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (GPT4DFCI). The researchers augmented GPT4DFCI with access to a comprehensive and curated database of the latest developments in digital pathology, consisting of 650 publications from 2022 onward, which added over 10,000 pages of literature.

AI Model to Improve Patient Response to Cancer Therapy

Researchers at The Australian National University (ANU), in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute and Pangea Biomed, have developed an AI tool called DeepPT to improve cancer treatment selection. DeepPT predicts a patient's mRNA profile, crucial for personalized cancer medicine, and works alongside another tool, ENLIGHT, to forecast patient responses to various cancer therapies. Trained on data from over 5,500 patients across 16 cancer types, DeepPT improved patient response rates from 33.3% to 46.5%. It also utilizes histopathology images, which are readily available and cost-effective, reducing delays in processing molecular data. The study was published in Nature Cancer.

Tempus Introduces New HER2 & FOLR1 Testing Solutions to Support Personalized Patient Care

Tempus has introduced new testing solutions for identifying patients with HER2 or FOLR1 expressing tumors, potentially making them eligible for targeted therapies such as antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs). These tests, available for all solid tumor cancers, can be added to Tempus' xT or xR next-generation sequencing assays. ADCs are therapies that target and kill tumor cells while sparing healthy cells, making them highly effective for patients with specific indications like HER2 and FOLR1 expressing tumors. HER2 testing is essential for guiding targeted therapy decisions, and FOLR1 testing is recommended for patients with epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer. Tempus' expanded testing portfolio aims to provide physicians with critical tools to optimize treatment options and improve patient outcomes.
